Sump Pumps for London Basements: Everything You Need to Know

If you have a cavity drain waterproofing system in your basement — or are planning one — a sump pump is not optional. It is the component that makes the whole system work. Without a functioning sump pump, water that enters the cavity drain system has nowhere to go, and your basement floods.

Yet sump pumps are often the least understood part of a basement waterproofing system. This guide explains everything you need to know.

A cavity drain membrane — such as the Delta systems we install — is fixed to the walls and floor of the basement. The studded surface of the membrane creates a void between the membrane and the wall, allowing any water that penetrates the structure to flow freely behind the membrane rather than into the living space.

This water is channelled by gravity into a drainage channel at the base of the walls, which directs it into a sump — a pit in the floor. The sump pump then pumps the collected water out of the basement, typically to a drain or soakaway.

Submersible pumps sit inside the sump pit, submerged in water. They are quiet, efficient and suitable for most residential basements. The motor is cooled by the water surrounding it, which extends its lifespan.

Pedestal pumps have the motor mounted above the sump pit on a pedestal, with only the pump intake submerged. They are easier to service but noisier and less suitable for finished basements.

For most London basement installations, we recommend submersible pumps from manufacturers such as Grundfos, Zoeller or Delta's own pump range.

A single sump pump is a single point of failure. If it breaks down during a period of heavy rain — which is exactly when you need it most — your basement floods. For this reason, we always install dual pump systems in London basements.

A dual pump system has two pumps in the same sump pit. The primary pump handles normal water ingress. The secondary pump activates automatically if the primary pump fails or if water ingress exceeds the primary pump's capacity. Both pumps are connected to a high water alarm that alerts you if water levels rise unexpectedly.

London experiences power cuts, particularly during storms. A mains-powered sump pump that fails during a power cut is useless at exactly the moment you need it most.

We install battery backup systems on all our sump pump installations. The battery backup activates automatically when mains power is lost and will run the pump for several hours — long enough to get through most power cuts. The battery is kept charged by the mains supply and tested automatically.

A sump pump requires regular maintenance to remain reliable. We recommend checking the pump every six months, testing the float switch by pouring water into the sump, checking the battery backup charge level, inspecting the discharge pipe for blockages, and having the system professionally serviced every two to three years.

Every sump pump installation should include a high water alarm. This is a float switch set above the normal operating level that triggers an audible alarm — and ideally a text or email alert — if water levels rise above the expected range. This gives you early warning of a pump failure or unusually high water ingress before flooding occurs.

A quality submersible sump pump, properly maintained, should last 7 to 10 years. The motor is the component most likely to fail, and replacement is straightforward. We recommend replacing pumps proactively at the 7-year mark rather than waiting for failure.
